Coverage Comes From Your Auto Insurance, Not Your Wallet
Every Ontario auto policy includes medical and rehabilitation coverage, and that did not change when the rules were updated on 1 July 2026. Treatment is available whether or not the collision was your fault.
We bill your auto insurer directly. Before anything starts we confirm your coverage and tell you exactly where you stand, so there are no surprises later.
The 2026 Rule Change, and What It Means for You
Ontario changed its auto insurance accident benefits rules on 1 July 2026. Two things matter if you have been in a collision.
Your treatment coverage is safe. Medical, rehabilitation and attendant care benefits are still included in every Ontario auto policy. Most other benefits, such as income replacement, became optional and now have to be bought separately. So if you are wondering whether physiotherapy is still covered, it is.
Which insurer pays first now depends on your policy date. If your auto policy started on or after 1 July 2026, your auto insurer generally pays before your work or private health plan. If your policy started before that date, your work or private plan may still pay first.
This trips people up, and billing the wrong insurer first is a common reason claims get rejected. We check which rules apply to your policy before we bill anything.
If you are not sure when your policy started, bring your pink slip or your policy documents to your first visit and we will look together.
How Much Treatment Is Covered
| Injury category | Standard coverage | What it usually looks like |
|---|---|---|
| Minor injury | Up to $3,500 | An assessment, then up to three four-week blocks of treatment, about twelve weeks in total |
| More than minor | Up to $65,000 in total for medical, rehabilitation and attendant care | Treatment plans submitted to your insurer as your recovery needs change |
| Catastrophic | Up to $1 million | Long term rehabilitation and support |
Some people buy higher limits than the standard amounts. Minor injury has a specific legal meaning in Ontario and covers sprains, strains, whiplash, bruises, scrapes, cuts and partial joint dislocations, plus problems that come from them.
What to Do After a Collision
Tell your insurer within 7 days
Call or email your insurance company and say you plan to claim accident benefits. A phone call is enough to start.
Return the application within 30 days
Your insurer sends you an application package with the OCF-1 form. Send it back within thirty days. If you are late, send it anyway and explain why.
Book your assessment
You do not need a referral or a lawyer. Bring your claim number if you have one, and your policy documents.
We handle the treatment forms
We submit the treatment paperwork to your insurer. For care beyond the minor injury pathway we send a treatment plan, and your insurer has ten business days to respond.
Injuries We Treat After a Car Accident
Whiplash is the most common one we see, and it often feels worse two or three days after the collision rather than on the day. Neck stiffness, headaches and pain that spreads into the shoulder are all typical.
We also treat mid and lower back pain, shoulder pain from the seatbelt or from bracing against the wheel, knee injuries from the dashboard, rib and chest wall pain, and concussion symptoms such as dizziness, light sensitivity and trouble concentrating.
Treatment is hands on and active. Early on it is about settling pain and getting you moving again. After that it moves to rebuilding strength and confidence so the problem does not linger.

Car Accident Physiotherapy FAQs
Who pays for physiotherapy after a car accident?
Your auto insurance does, through Ontario's accident benefits system. Every Ontario auto policy has to include medical and rehabilitation coverage, and that did not change in 2026.
We bill your auto insurer directly, so you are not paying out of pocket for approved treatment.
Does my work or private health plan have to pay first?
It depends on when your auto policy started. Ontario changed the rules on 1 July 2026.
If your policy began on or after 1 July 2026, your auto insurer generally pays first. If your policy started before that date, your work or private plan may still need to pay first.
We check which applies to you before we bill anything, so nothing gets rejected and you are not left with a bill.
What if the accident was my fault?
Accident benefits in Ontario are no fault. That means you can claim medical and rehabilitation benefits no matter who caused the collision.
Fault itself is decided by your insurance company using Ontario's fault rules. How a claim affects your premium is a question for your insurer or broker, and it is separate from your right to treatment.
How much treatment is covered?
If your injuries are classed as minor, Ontario caps treatment at $3,500. Minor injury has a specific legal meaning and covers sprains, strains, whiplash, bruises, scrapes, cuts and partial joint dislocations, plus problems that come from them.
If your injuries are more than minor, standard coverage is up to $65,000 in total for medical, rehabilitation and attendant care. For catastrophic injuries it is up to $1 million. Some people buy higher limits.
We tell you where you stand before treatment starts.
What is the Minor Injury Guideline?
It is the standard pathway for minor injuries after a collision. It starts with an assessment, then up to three four-week blocks of treatment, which is about twelve weeks in total.
It all sits inside the $3,500 limit, and your insurer does not need to approve each block separately.
Do I need a lawyer to get treatment?
No. You do not need a lawyer to apply for accident benefits or to start physiotherapy. Many people are treated without ever involving one.
If your injuries are serious or your claim gets complicated, some people choose to get legal advice. That is your call and it does not change whether we can treat you.
Do I need a doctor's referral?
No. In Ontario you can see a physiotherapist directly. Some insurers still ask for a referral before they will pay, so we check your policy first and tell you if one is needed.
How soon after the accident should I come in?
As soon as you can. Starting early usually makes recovery smoother, and it also puts your injuries on record early, which helps your claim.
There are two deadlines worth knowing. Tell your insurance company within seven days that you plan to claim. Once they send you the application package, return it within thirty days.
If you miss either, send it anyway and explain why. Late does not automatically mean denied.
My accident was weeks ago and I still hurt. Is it too late?
No. Whiplash and soft tissue injuries often feel worse days or weeks later, and this is common. It is worth being assessed even if some time has passed.
If you have not started a claim yet, we can point you to the steps. Come in and get assessed either way.
What forms are involved?
The main one you complete is the OCF-1, the application for accident benefits. Your insurer sends it to you after you notify them.
We complete the treatment side. If you are on the minor injury pathway we submit a treatment confirmation form. If you need care beyond that, we submit a treatment plan called the OCF-18. Your insurer then has ten business days to respond to it.
What injuries do you treat after a collision?
Whiplash and neck pain. Mid and lower back pain. Headaches that started after the crash. Shoulder pain from the seatbelt or from bracing. Knee injuries from the dashboard. Concussion symptoms. Rib and chest wall pain.
We also see people whose old injury flared up again after a collision.
Do I have to use the clinic my insurer suggests?
No. You choose your own physiotherapy clinic in Ontario. An insurer can tell you what they will cover, and they do not choose your provider for you.
Where is your clinic and is parking free?
We are at 1280 Mohawk Rd #103 in Ancaster, L9G 3K9, minutes from the Hamilton Mountain and straight off Highway 403. Parking is free and directly outside the door, with no stairs at the entrance.
